This week, we will show the first part of “We Regret to Inform
You”. Taryn Davis, 22, lost her husband, Army Cpl. Michael W. Davis,
after an IED exploded by his vehicle in Iraq. In her search for peer support,
Taryn founded the American Widow Project four months after Michael's death.
Using the power of the internet and MySpace, Taryn has reached out to over 100
young military widows, offering peer support and resources for those who are
still reliving the words delivered by two service members at their doors: “The
Secretary of Defense regrets to inform you...". Take a moment to watch the
trailer.
After the “real story”, there will be a moderated discussion with Taryn
Davis. Jim Sheeler, Pulitzer
Prize-winning author of, "Final Salute: A Story of Unfinished Lives",
will join the conversation as well. The discussion also features a groundbreaking component
where we allow our viewers to join the webcast using their web cameras from
their homes or offices. Just send a video skype or video ichat to
itbmac5 and you can ask your question live. If you have a
question during the webcast, you can email it to question@intheirboots.com. Our
host, Jan Bender, will incorporate your question into the webcast. Audience participation is
critical to this show. We want to hear your thoughts and questions. Please join

In
an effort to provide returning veterans with an outlet for writing about their
experiences, The Writer's Center
and acclaimed novelist and Vietnam veteran Richard Currey (Fatal Light, The Wars of Heaven)
have teamed to present a 4-week online workshop titled "Writing for Veterans."
The
workshop is aimed at veterans of all eras as well as active-duty military folks
who are interested, Currey says, "in fiction and non-fiction investigation
of their experience in and around military life." Those who take part in
the program "will explore ways to approach the subject, variations on
re-emerging literary themes, and how to make one's own stories ring beyond the
personal and particular and reflect a wider emotional range."
The
workshop begins on October 1st and runs through Oct. 22nd.
A
full description of the workshop can be found here.

Former Staff Sgt. Kevin Owsley is not quite sure what rattled his brain
in 2004: the roadside bomb that exploded about a yard from his Humvee
or the rocket-propelled grenade that flung him across a road as he
walked to a Porta Potti on base six weeks later.
After each attack, he did what so many soldiers do in Iraq.
He shrugged off his ailments — headaches, dizzy spells, persistent
ringing in his ears and numbness in his right arm — chalking them up to
fatigue or dehydration. Given that he never lost consciousness, he figured the discomfort would work itself out and kept it to himself.

VA Media Relations - The
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will use a locality-based approach in
raising ceilings on its no-downpayment home loans from the current $417,000 to
as much as $729,000.
The increases are effective immediately under
legislation recently enacted with President Bush signing the Housing and
Economic Recovery Act of 2008.
That law also improved VA's Specially Adapted Housing
Program. It raises primary grants from $50,000 to $60,000 toward
constructing a new home or modifying an existing home to meet adaptive needs of
veterans or active duty servicemembers with certain service-connected
disabilities.
One new feature is a provision in the law that will
assist burn victims. It will allow veterans with certain
service-connected disabilities resulting from severe burns to receive the
adaptive housing grants. The new law also makes future increases in
ceilings on the Specially Adapted Housing Program automatic.
The increased limits in the general home loan program
for all veterans' home purchases or construction will be based on local housing
costs, tied to the similar locality adjustments of the Federal Home Loan
Mortgage Corp., Freddie Mac.
VA home loans are available for veterans to purchase
or construct single-family homes, and to purchase condominiums or cooperative
apartments. There are about 2.3 million existing VA home loans, more than
90 percent made with no down payment.
More information about VA home loans and adaptive
grants is available from VA at 877-827-3702 or www.homeloans.va.gov.
